In 1881, King David Kalakaua was the first monarch to travel the world to develop diplomatic relations with other countries with the goal of seeking recognition for the Kingdom of Hawai’i as a sovereign and independent nation.
On his his travels, he observed how rulers led their countries and had a keen interest in studying immigration.
His world voyage took him to San Francisco. The Empire of Japan, China, Siam (Thailand), Burma (Myanmar), India, Egypt, Italy, Belgium, the German Empire, Austria-Hungary, the French Third Republic, Spain, Portugal, England, and the United States. He met heads of state: U.S. President Chester A. Arthur, Queen Victoria of England, Pope Leo XIlI, the Meiji Emperor of the Empire of Japan, Umberto I of Italy, Viceroy of Egypt Tewfik Pasha, William I of Germany, and Rama V of Siam.
During this trip, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser published “The King’s Tour Around the World,” a regular column.
